Texas’ attraction for business

Just a quick follow-up on a couple of recent posts — notably, Round-up of Good News About Austin, 04/19/11, and Austin #1 for jobs, 05/03/11 — I was happy to see this new article in the Austin Business Journal today:

Texas ranked third most competitive for business

The article notes Samsung’s expansion in Austin, and recalled that in March 2011 the same publisher (Conway Data) recognized Texas with the Site Selection Governor’s Cup for the most new and expanded corporate facilities.  (See Texas named leading state for new plant locations, expansions.)In addition, there has been considerable discussion lately of corporate expansions and relocations from California to Texas (see California Begs Texas for Job-Creating Recipe With Growth Trading Places).  Noting disagreement from a senior economist from UCLA (see UCLA tries to put economic debate about California and Texas to rest), two announcements this week demonstrate that, at least for now, Texas and Austin remain attractive for corporate growth:

This is not gloating, but simply reporting.  Indeed, I would love to see business expansion gain momentum in California, and nationwide.  I have noted many times that even with many local and regional economic strengths, Austin’s continued economic success — generally, and our real estate business specifically — ultimately depends on a come-back in the states that have suffered most during this recession.  I am bullish on Austin, but this is not an “us vs. them” topic.  This is most definitely a case in which we ‘re all in this together, and I wish great prosperity for all Americans.
