A few days ago the Austin Chamber Of Commerce published a very good summary of employment and unemployment in the Austin area. This chart points most directly to a key strength of our local economy:
Obviously, most of the other cities in that report are not experiencing the market strength we see here in Austin, but that has much to do with where they were before the bubble burst in 2007/2008, and how far their housing markets fell before showing any signs of rebounding.
The Chamber’s report does a great job of describing where Austin’s employment growth (and losses) have come from, and how we compare to other cities in Texas and elsewhere. This is well worth a read.
